According to legend, the Maharal of Prague — the great 16th-century rabbi and mystic Rabbi Judah Loew — formed the Golem from clay and brought it to life through the secrets of Kabbalah.
Neither man nor beast, the Golem was created to defend the Jews of Prague from antisemitic violence. It was a protector, a warning, and a reminder that Jewish folklore has never been short on monsters willing to fight on the right side.
The legend helped inspire later stories like Frankenstein, but the Golem got there first: a clay guardian with holy letters, heavy fists, and a very specific problem with Jew-haters.
Maccabee Apparel’s Golem design gives the classic legend a fantasy-warrior treatment, with the Maharal sending his creation forth to protect the innocent and make antisemites reconsider their life choices.
