According to legend, the renowned 16th century scholar and mystic Rabbi Judah Loew (a.k.a. The Maharal of Prague) conjured a living being using mud from the banks of the river Vlavta and the secrets of Kabbalah.  This creature, not exactly an animal nor a man, is known as The Golem.  The Maharal's golem was charged with protecting the Jewish residents of the city from the anti-Semitic violence of their neighbors, a recurring feature of everyday life back then that unfortunately seems to be back in style these days.

Historians say that the legend of The Golem was an inspiration for the book Frankenstein, which makes sense, as it was a popular tale right around the time Mary Shelly put pen to paper.  But we like to think of The Golem as sort of a Renaissance-era Terminator T-800, programmed to prevent hate crimes and mete out justice.  Macabee Apparel's Golem design includes a fanciful portrayal of the Maharal, instructing his Golem to go forth and protect the innocent from maurading Jew-haters, and has a fantasy vibe that we enjoy. If you like this piece as much as we do, be sure to check out the other fantasy and mysticism-inspired designs in our Kabbalah Collection.
