This one is for all our fellow Jewish Trekkies out there!

There are a number of fascinating customs surrounding the traditional celebration of Chanukah (and just as many ways to spell it). For example: Beit Hillel taught that we kindle one light the first night, two the second night, and so on, whereas Beit Shammai taught the reverse, starting with eight and working one's way down over the course of the festival. The Chanukah menorah itself can be made from all sorts of materials--from humble clay to the finest gold. Here at Maccabee Apparel, we follow the custom of Beit Martok, which teaches the best menorah is the one made from the weapons of one's fallen enemies. (All jokes aside, the original Maccabees actually did this! See: https://www.jewishideas.org/article/menorah-spears)

Winter is generally considered the "holiday season" in secular culture, and as a result, even well-meaning people will mistake Chanukah for "Jewish Christmas," when in fact the celebrations have nothing to do with each other. Peace and goodwill are lovely, but on Chanukah we remember the Hebrew fighting spirit, and a proud history of standing up to defend ourselves, our freedom, and our way of life, no matter the odds. As Lieutenant Commander Worf ben Mogh knows, it truly is a warrior's holiday!
